The term 4 g refers to the fourth-generation cell phone network technology, succeeding the previous standard for third-generation, 3 g. It is commonly used as a marketing term for network service providers of mobile telephony to describe upcoming improvements to the existing cellular network.
In October 2010, the telecommunications standards body International Telecommunications Union, set the standard for 4 g technology. According to the ITU, the 4 g network must be capable of delivering a maximum download speed of 100 megabits per second (Mbps) for highly mobile applications such as cellular phones and tablets, and be able to reach up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps), in a local wireless access environment.
Designed Features and Use
4 g networks will be faster than current 3 g networks, which have a higher download speed of 1 Mbps in ideal conditions. A key feature of a 4 g network is a seamless data transfer while a device moves from one network to another, eliminating links and broken packages during downloads. This will allow expanded applications, like watching high-definition TV from a mobile device, in addition to real-time updates of the navigation system.
Marketing and Real Candidates for 4 G Technology
The term 4 g has been mainly used as a marketing term, with two technologies at the forefront: Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) and 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE). The ITU considers 3GPP LTE and WiMAX technologies as candidates for the 4 g.
High Speed Packet Access (HSPA +) is another technology that is commonly marketed as 4 g. Although considered a predecessor, the ITU 4 g HSPA + not consider as a candidate for 4 g.
The 4 G in Brazil
