Actioncam Test: Gopro Hero 3 +, Camileo X-Sports, Rollei

Who turns outdoor videos, or access to the GoPro? Other manufacturers have action cameras in the range that performance technically do not have to hide behind the leader. On the contrary, some significantly cheaper cameras offer even much more. We have compared the GoPro Hero 3 + with two opponents. Free ring, camera running!
It is amazing how quickly the GoPro synonymous with Outdoorkameras blossomed has, she’s practically the Actioncams tempo handkerchief. Whether in television shows as “I’m a celebrity, get me out of here”, when formula 1 racing or extreme sports: everywhere you can see the little camera. Almost as if there were no alternatives. But there are plenty, finally, even a Smartphone can be transformed with the right accessories in an Actioncam.
It is no wonder that the GoPro system is so successful: It is one on which essential reduced camera – a few buttons, a simple operation and tiny design with an inexhaustible range of accessories. This is however also the sticking point on the system.
The camera will already cost several hundred euros – the flagship Hero 3 + even around 450 euro-, you’re paying on it again vigorously for special holders, bags and batteries. Since the comparison to Apple is formally, because also here original accessories costs 30 euros, a multiple of what buyers of competing products have to pay quickly.
Clearly, The GoPro is a great product, but nevertheless it is priced just, that you look around for alternatives. Especially when the features of competing cameras are almost identical – at least on paper. We opted for the comparison for the new Camileo X-sports by Toshiba and the Rollei Actioncam. Both cameras are much cheaper than the GoPro even though they even by default have a display unlike the Platzhirsch.
The Opponents at A Glance
The Camileo X-sports is a tad larger than the GoPro and last but not least works, thanks to the large display on the back, like a full-fledged camera. The Camileo takes 12 megapixel photos, videos in full HD-quality. The manual zoom, which you two buttons is very convenient. Also, a built-in image stabilizer ensures quieter pictures. Built as with the GoPro “Wiki” is also to be able to control the camera using a smart phone. The accessory is quite extensive: in addition to various brackets and the waterproof Schutzcase is also a remote control set for less than 300 euros.

Rollei offers its small Actioncam at almost the same price. The camera looks like an overweight GoPro. The front, the battery is located behind the can be replaced – for four different coloured covers are included in the package. Photos are taken even with 14 Megapixels, full HD quality videos also. You can look forward for the Rollei about an extra battery along with various brackets and a waterproof case. Also there’s still a remote control, if you want to control the camera using Smartphone remotely.
First Impression: The Gopro and Their Children
Where a camera thanks to rubber-coated surface that offers more grip, the other with a noble black finish scores. But the external differences of small cameras are marginal, especially if they’re in the protective cover. And looking at the extensive range of accessories, the differences are even less. We had to be careful not to confuse the different types of support. It is almost as if other manufacturers wanted to be sure, that their cameras look like a GoPro. But, this has the advantage that you can buy accessories from different providers.
It is practical for all three cameras that is mounting, as well as the establishment of via Smartphone easily by hand. The corresponding apps offer the manufacturer for iOS devices and Android smartphones, GoPro has developed also an app for Windows phones. A tip: As the live image from the camera via Wi-Fi easily delayed is transferred to your Smartphone, you should always a little when setting the viewing angle to wait you stabilized the attachment.
Rollei with Major Children’s Diseases
On a test run with the scooter, we have reviewed the image quality of the video recordings. All three cameras we previously made the format on wide angle, so the typical look of the GoPro footage. And here are the first serious differences of the three systems. GoPro uses Spartan operation, all settings must be selected with two buttons and activated.
The monochrome mini display on the front panel only each displays a menu item. It sounds awkward, turns out but as a good solution. Because that provides a large display for an easier operation, refuting the camera from Toshiba as well as the Actioncam by Rollei. And more buttons and switch on the camera does not also help with intuitive operation.
Unfortunately, one of the Contracting Parties stretched the weapons even before the first test ride. The Rollei Actioncam wants to simply not persuaded to start recording. Although we have several times the camera cumbersome menu the factory data set and repeatedly formats also the inserted memory card, the camera did not work. Even more: Often the camera was not exhibiting. Here only helped take the battery out of the appliance. Of course, it can happen once that a test device has errors, especially if it’s a pre-production model. However, in this case a selling product was provided us.
The recordings of the other two cameras provided with us but for pleasure. The quality of the videos is similar to GoPro and Toshiba, the Camileo plays the colors a little more intense. And in two shots, you can see each vibration of the drive, the image wobbles violently in two videos in some places. Here, we had actually expected that the image stabilizer of the Camileo brings more peace and quiet. Overall, it is hardly possible to associate a picture of a camera – and this is certainly not a disadvantage.
Conclusion: It Must be Not Always the Market Leader
Like we had expressed a positive opinion to the Rollei: the Actioncam looks just fine and individualize themselves. The wide range of accessories and above all the extra battery convinced us – on the contrary to the complex operation of the software. But we can give no rating by the total failure. However, it would have helped sure a long-standing camera specialists such as Rollei if you at the Actioncam not only on appearance and performance values would have taken, but also would have invested more time and money in the software.
Looking only at image quality, features and accessories, it is almost impossible to select a winner among the remaining two cameras. The GoPro even videos can absorb in the trendy high resolution 4K-Format, but that is probably more of a marketing gimmick. Because these videos are recorded only with 12.5 pictures per second. And where the GoPro with simplicity scores, the Camileo with the ability to use it as a normal camera.
So only the price remains. The GoPro Hero 3 + costs around 450 euro, the Camileo from Toshiba, however, around 280 euros. And want you take also advantage of a display at the GoPro, you need to buy that. It has of course always benefits to buy equipment from a market leader, finally accessories can be this world’s purchase. But the Camileo shows that you have to – to make no cuts in image, sound and handling for a lower investment and that’s what matters finally.
